Key Facts About Debt Review in South Africa
Quick reference for the most important information about debt review and debt review removal.
What is Debt Review?
Debt review (also called debt counselling) is a legal debt relief programme under the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. It is designed for South Africans who are over-indebted — meaning their income is insufficient to meet all their monthly debt obligations.
Under debt review, a registered debt counsellor restructures your repayments into a single, affordable monthly instalment, and creditors are legally prevented from taking action against you while you are under debt review protection.
A debt review flag is placed on your credit profile at all major credit bureaus, preventing new credit from being granted.
When Can You Exit Debt Review?
You can legally exit debt review — removing the debt review flag from your credit profile — when:
- All short-term debts are fully settled — a clearance certificate (Form 19) is issued at R2,900
- You are no longer over-indebted — a court order is obtained rescinding the debt review at R6,500
Which Credit Bureaus are Updated?
When debt review is removed, all four major South African credit bureaus must be notified:
- TransUnion (formerly ITC)
- Experian
- XDS (formerly Crosscheck Data Solutions)
- Compuscan (now part of Experian)
Victor DC notifies all four bureaus as part of every debt review removal service.
